About the Producer
After noticing successful efforts in other communities, residents of the Cabañas community began experimenting with coffee cultivation in 2000, starting with Pacas and Typica varietals. This community effort was all but wiped out after the Honduras-wide outbreak of Roya (leaf rust) in 2011.
With the help of the Honduras Coffee Institute, three producers formed Proyecto Cabañas, replanting with rust-resistant varieties (mainly Lempira and IH90) and installed a pulping machine and three raised beds for drying on a rented plot of land.
The project has gone from strength to strength, now working with a network of approx. 20 producers and upgraded wet-mill and drying station facilities.
