About the Producer

West Arsi may have recently emerged as a celebrated coffee-producing region on the international stage, but its coffee heritage runs deep, dating back generations. Historically, coffees from this area were sold under the Sidamo or Harrar classifications. However, with a recent designation as a distinct coffee-growing origin by the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange, West Arsi has begun to shine in its own right. The region gained further recognition through international quality competitions, notably the Ethiopian Cup of Excellence, where coffees from West Arsi secured 4 of the top 10 spots in 2020.

At SNAP’s Meraro Washing Station —ripe cherries are delivered by local producers. These farmers cultivate a mix of Landrace and JARC varieties, which are handpicked and carefully processed. This lot underwent traditional Natural processing, with cherries dried on raised beds. To ensure optimal drying conditions, cherries are frequently turned and covered during the hottest parts of the day and at night.

While West Arsi coffees were once grouped with Sidama, they have now gained recognition for their individual characteristics. Nensebo Woreda, located 400 kilometers south of Addis Ababa, is home to smallholder farmers managing around 5,000 hectares of coffee. With average farm sizes of two hectares, these producers rely on traditional methods to cultivate heirloom and wild varieties that are native to the region
