Rwanda's Evolving Coffee Landscape

Rwanda's Evolving Coffee Landscape

Located in the Great Rift Valley of East Africa, Rwanda contains lush green mountainous landscapes, magnificent waterways and a committed coffee community. Having deep roots in coffee, dating as far back as the early 1900s, coffee has become a key component of Rwanda's economy, supporting over 400,000 smallholder farmers. Over the years, we've cultivated strong relationships with Rwandan farmers dedicated to producing quality coffee.

Our Rwandan coffee comes from co-operatives that promote sustainable farming, where they are committed to maintaining traditional practices passed down through generations, as well as intertwining and embracing modern innovations. By combining this knowledge, they consistently produce exceptional coffee that reflects the unique characteristics of Rwanda's growing climate.

Rwandan coffee often exhibits vibrant notes of citrus, red berries and a tea-like floral quality. This natural brightness is balanced by a rich, creamy body, making it a perfect coffee for those who love a fruity, aromatic cup with a smooth finish. Every time we cup a new lot here at HQ, we're reminded why Rwanda is regarded as one of Africa’s top coffee producing countries. With more and more consumers seeking single-origin coffee, Rwanda is gaining recognition as a leader in this space, providing traceability and transparency in their lots. It’s this combination of flavour and traceability that makes Rwanda such an attractive origin for us at LCM, and equally so in our current supply to the market.

Whilst heritage and tradition remain important, we love that Rwandan farmers are also embracing innovation to enhance their offerings. We are seeing exciting developments in coffee processing methods, such as honey processing and experimental fermentation techniques. Developments like these allow farmers to create even more distinctive flavour profiles, giving them a point of difference in the market. With new producing and processing methods, innovative technology and a consumer demand to match, Rwanda continues to evolve to help push the current coffee landscape, going above and beyond the rising expectations of end consumers.
