Peruvian Harvest

Peruvian Harvest

Rich in cultural heritage, Peru is often known for its history, with links to the ancient Mayans, astounding archaeological sites such as Machu Picchu and stunning naturally enhanced geoglyphs such as the Nazca Lines. However, flying under the radar compared to its South American neighbours Brazil and Colombia, Peru is quietly producing some fantastic refined coffee lots.

As seen with other key coffee origins, Peru showcases a myriad of tasting profiles, due to its variety in growing conditions across its multiple of departments. Most notably are the regions of Cajamarca, Cusco and Puno.

Situated in the Northern Highlands of Peru, the Cajamarca department borders Ecuador. LCM's interest piques with San Ignacio, a small producing region in the department with plenty of exciting distinguishing characteristics. Coffee farms here sit between 1,200 - 2,000masl, featuring distinct wet and dry seasons which allow flavour profiles to thrive.

It is within this array of varietals and processing methods, where San Ignacio co-operatives such as Faical produce a range of special tasting lots. Coffee from here is known for its medium body, bright acidity and citrus, floral notes with chocolatey undertones. With these distinct flavour profiles comes a commitment to quality and process, and this stems from Peru's dedication to producing quality organic coffee.

With the recent market boom for organic coffee, Peru has stepped forward as a key producing origin. With a governmental focus on sustainability, co-operatives of Peru have set up some of the world's most renowned coffee producing facilities, with a significant portion of Peruvian coffee flying the organic flag. This is one of our favourite pull factors about Peruvian coffee, with a willingness to produce under strict certification guidelines such as Fair Trade and Rain Forest Alliance (RFA), and without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. These enthusiastic producers willing to meet these standards are demonstrating their true commitment to sustainable organic production.

The Peruvian main crop harvest is currently underway, and there is a lot to look forward to in the coming months. Make sure to reach out to your Account Manager, or email us at info@langdoncoffee.com.au for more information.
